The visual paraphernalia —smoke, powerful light beams, stroboscopes, bursts of flames, fireworks or pyrotechnics, giant balloons with confetti inside, used for instance by rock bands/singers like Kiss, Queen, Europe, Alice Cooper— was not necessary long time ago. The stage of The Carpenters, for example, was lighted by white lamps, behind them was a curtain or a wall painted in pastel colors...
However, a good musician does not need at all the aforementioned visual effects/paraphernalia.
